JFocusPrev.gif Jupiter is the largest and fifth planet from the Sun. It orbits the sun just outside the asteroid belt. It contains more mass than all the other planets combined. Jupiter has continuous storms of high-pressure gas, and an atmosphere mostly of hydrogen, helium, and methane. It has a rocky core then a liquid metallic Hydrogen layer, and finally a liquid hydrogen outer layer. So Jupiter has no hard surface.

It has a fairly large red spot. That actually is a large storm that has existed for over 400 years. It is much like a hurricane on Earth but it is large enough you could fit 3 Earths in it. The storm rotates counter clockwise and makes a full rotation about every six days. Jupiter has 63 known moons. Most are less than 6 miles in diameter. Four major moons are Europa, Callisto, Io, and Ganymede.

1 orbit of the sun = 4332.59 days

1 rotation = 9 hours 55 minutes

Mass = 317 times more than Earth

Volume = 1318 times more than Earth

Escape velocity = 133,100 miles per hour

Distance from Sun = 483 million miles

Average temperature = -244 degrees Fahrenheit

Diameter = 88,846 miles
