Mars is a very interesting planet. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. There is 141,633,260 miles between the two. It takes 686.98 days to orbit around the sun. There are two moons on Mars, Phobos and Deimos. The atmosphere is made of Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon. Mars takes 24 hours and 37 minutes to rotate around itself (Mars for Kids).


History


Mars was named after the Roman God of War and Agriculture. People say that Mars was named after the Roman God of War because or Mars’s red color (Arty Part Time Astronaut). We don’t know who discovered Mars at first. It is a great kept secret, only known by the person who found it (Arnett, Bill).

Physical Properties


Mars has many physical properties. Mars has a diameter of 6,794 kilometers. The mass of Mars is 6.4219 kilograms. The density of Mars is 3.933 kilograms per meters cubed. The escape velocity on Mars is 5.03. The temperature on Mars ranges -200 degrees Fahrenheit to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The surface on Mars is made of volcanoes, canyons, plains, craters, and possibly water. The atmosphere on Mars is made of 95.32 percent Carbon Dioxide, 2.7 percent Nitrogen, Argon makes up 1.6 percent of the atmosphere, 0.13 percent of the atmosphere is Oxygen, 0.03 percent is Water, and the final 0.00025 percent of the atmosphere Neon (Russell, Randy). Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons.

Planet Exploration

Mars has two satellites. One was placed on Phobos on 1877. The other was placed on Deimos also in the year 1877. On November 28, 1964, NASA decided to explore Mars. It was a 228 day mission on the Mariner 4. There were no new findings on this mission. There are also two robot rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. They were placed on January 4, 2004. This found out that there was possibly water on Mars (National Geographic).

Have you ever wondered how old a fourteen year old will be on Mars? Or if you weigh 110 or 170 pounds on Earth, what your weight on Mars would be? Or maybe when will your next birthday would be on Mars? Those questions can be answered here. If you are fourteen years old on Earth, you would be seven (7) years old. On Mars if you weigh 41.4 pounds, you would weigh 110 pounds on Earth. On Earth, if you weighed 170 pounds can you guess what you would weigh on Mars? Well you would weigh 64 pounds. If your birthday is on November 28 on Earth, you would have to wait 4987.7 Martian days for your next birthday! That is equivalent to 7.4 Martian years. Did you know that the month March came from Mars? Or that if you make a model of the solar system, with the sun being 615 millimeters, that Mars would be only 2.9 millimeters (Exploratorium)? Mars can be so interesting.
